The peepers
stand on the tip of their tiptoes
and in the window
can see me chew up the feast:
as it stands on plates, platters,
trenchers, bowls, tureens,
saucers, cups, mugs, dishes
can watch as I chew this up:
pheasants, pigs, pigeons, ducks,
geese, swans, chickens,
bovine flesh and equine flesh
sauced salted and unsauced,
fish flesh and flying flesh,
penguin and puffin
flakes of flesh grated like cheese
flesh fresh-fried in a pan
flesh overdone and underdone
all and any and every
kind of flesh
they can watch me chew this
the skin of fighting cocks
and watch me chew this
the skin of our candidate
rim of dish intensely sugared
or rim a mix of salt and sugar
to make the sweet bitter
and make the bitter sweet
